Jack Mouchawar September 18, 2014 F Block Mr. Clark Sacrifice Leads to Death Final Draft In The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wide and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, the characters: Okonkwo, Obierika, Dorian, and Sibyl Vane make sacrifices in two different ways: internally and externally. Consequently, all the emotions of the characters in the novel that led up to the sacrifice were anger, insanity, depression, and loyalty, which all result in death. Okonkwo and Obierika’s sacrifices are worth it because the emotions that they have when making the sacrifice show that they are fighting for their inalienable rights. Dorian Gray and Sibyl Vane’s sacrifices are not worth it because the emotions that they show is cowardly and weak. In Things Fall Apart, the characters make many courageous sacrifices for their family and tribe. An exemplification of a sacrifice is Obierika’s decision to go against the rules of his tribe, and remain loyal to Okonkwo. He updates Okonkwo on the good and bad things happening in Umuofia, â€Å"‘That is the money from your yams,’ he said. ‘ I sold the big ones as soon as you left’† (142). The quote shows Obierika’s loyalty to Okonkwo as he is opting to leave the village unnoticed to give Okonkwo food and money. The author, Chinua Achebe incorporates Obierika’s risk into the novel as acts of friendship and loyalty to his leader, even though Obierika should not converse with Okonkwo since Umuofia has an ignoble feeling about him now.
